Federal Office Building #02 (FOB2) Environmental Remediation
Location: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA
Scope: Provide labor, materials, equipment, and supervision for the removal of demolition debris and site restoration.
Berner Construction, Inc. was subcontracted to Watermark Environmental Inc. for the removal of demolition debris in soil and site restoration of identified areas of the FOB2 complex for use as an extension of the Arlington National Cemetery. The 46-acre site consists of several parcels of disturbed land that required surface raking and deep excavation to remove demolition debris left in the soil from previous demolition activities.
Erosion control measures were implemented at the site including stabilized construction entrance and tire-scrubber, VA-approved silt fence, and storm and surface water inlet protection. The existing storm water facilities and other utilities were marked and protected during the excavation activities.
Approximately 60,000 cy of soil and debris was excavated. The excavated soil was screened to remove construction and demolition debris including building debris, concrete footers and foundations, support infrastructure, and other man-made items that would not be found in unaltered land. Screened material was backfilled and compacted in 12-inch lifts.
Oversized materials were stockpiled on-site by material type and intended disposal facility. The oversized materials were then loaded into transport vehicles for off-site disposal.
Dust control was implemented using a dedicated water truck due to the dust potential from the loading and screening operations. The excavated and backfilled areas were graded to promote positive storm water drainage. The disturbed areas were restored by hydro seeding.
The project was completed within budget and schedule of four months.
