Installation of RPMs at Mississippi State Port
Location: Gulfport, Mississippi
Scope: Installation of radiation portal monitor (RPM) systems and ancillary equipment at the Mississippi State Port.

Berner Construction, Inc. was contracted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which is operated by Battelle Memorial Institute for the Department of Energy, to complete the installation of RPMs for the State Port in Gulfport, Mississippi. At the completion of the project, PNNL, transferred the ownership of installed systems to the U.S. Government under the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under the Department of Homeland Security.
The project scope was to install RPM system at each of the three of the gates at the Port, a CBP booth mounted on a platform, four visual identification cameras, two intercom speakers, two surveillance cameras, three traffic signals, two gate arms, and related equipment.
The work scope included the electrical installation of electrical conduit and wiring for operation of the monitors, cameras, gate arms, traffic signals, and intercoms. The power and signal cables and wires were installed from the RPMs to the CBP booth. The electrical wiring was placed in conduits installed below grade in trenches that were backfilled with dyed controlled density fill.
Concrete foundations were constructed for the RPMs, CBP booth platform, and supporting equipment. Deep caisson foundations were constructed for the RPMs to be installed where the water table was high. Berner installed the government-furnished equipment including RPMs, annunicators, control boxes and supervisory
computer. The project was then completed with the asphalt pavement restoration and markings.
The work activities were coordinated with the terminal operators and CBP personnel to ensure that there was no interruption to normal terminal activities during construction. Work was completed during the spring and summer 2010.
