Low Impact Development and Validation Project
How We Helped:Supply, construct, and install landing strip constructed using a Firestone® proprietary reinforced turf system
Berner Construction was awarded a contract for the construction of a landing strip for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) at a secure location in Maryland. The objective of the project is to safely and effectively construct a low maintenance reinforced natural grass turf landing strip to allow for takeoff and landing of model UAV aircraft.
The scope of the UAV landing strip project included the supply and installation of the specified propriety reinforced turf system manufactured by Firestone® Specialty Products. The 450 foot long by 75 foot wide landing strip was constructed on an existing field at the secure location.
The Firestone® EPIC system was installed by placing multiple drainage elements and aggregate layers in shallow excavation The project also includes the installation of an infiltration trench, rainwater collection system, water distribution system, and a concrete pad and sidewalk for access to the field.
The landing strip was constructed in an area that had the potential for containing unexploded ordnance, therefore, all excavation areas were swept and cleared by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) crew prior to each two-feet excavation increment.
A 21,000 gallon rainwater collection system and manholes were supplied and installed to support the water requirements of the turf system.
The area was restored by applying specialized seed, fertilizer, and the Netlon® elements on the landing strip and adjacent disturbed areas.
