New Utility Installation Project, Andrews Air Force Base
How We Helped:Provide labor, material, tools, equipment, and supervision to install new potable water, storm sewer, and force main sanitary sewer lines at Andrews Air Force Base (AFB)
Berner Construction was contracted by Weston Solutions, Inc. in West Chester, PA to install new storm (gravity) sewers, force main sanitary sewers, and potable water piping at Andrews AFB located in Camp Springs, MD. The new utility systems are being installed in support of the construction of a new visitor center and a new security building at two vehicle access gates located at Main and Virginia Avenues.
In general, the project included excavation, bedding, installation of new piping, and placement of pipe markers, tie-ins to existing piping and/or manholes, backfill, compaction, and restoration. The new potable water line work included installation of new fire hydrants. The gravity and force main sanitary sewer line work included installation of new 2-inch schedule 80 PVC force main, two new sewer pump stations (Hydromatic® TL-PRO Simplex Grinder Package System), one new sanitary sewer manhole, and 8-inch SDR 35 gravity sanitary piping.
Installation of many of the new utilities required routing around existing fiber optic communication lines, gas lines, and water lines. All work was coordinated so as to not disrupt ongoing base activities. A total of approximately 3,100 feet of stormwater piping, 1,500 feet of potable water piping, and 2,500 feet of sanitary piping were installed. Once the installation activities were completed the most areas were restored to original condition. The project commenced in May 2006 and was completed in December 2006.
