St. Clair East – North Port Carbon
How We Helped:Provide labor, materials, equipment, and supervision to reclaim an abandoned strip coal mine area.
Berner Construction was awarded a contract from the PA Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, to reclaim an abandoned strip coal mine site located in Blythe and East Norwegian Townships, Schuylkill County, PA. The 140-acre ecosystem restoration project includes clearing and grubbing, excavating, backfilling, grading, constructing ditches, shoring, installing pipes, water line relocation, removing an existing structure, implementation of the Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan, and site restoration.
The site consists of three areas requiring relocation of displaced materials from the mining operations. The heavily wooded site is to be cleared and the trees and brush will be used to construct 8,000 linear feet of brush barriers for wildlife habitats. Approximately 2,171,300 cubic yards of displaced materials will be used to backfill and grade the abandoned strip pits located onsite.
In addition to the site reclamation, three areas require replacement of reinforced concrete piping for stormwater and mine water conveyance. The installation of this piping requires the relocation of water pipe and the installation of bypass systems while the work is accomplished.
The project also includes the construction of nearly two miles of rock-lined ditches for stormwater conveyance around the site.
Berner Caterpillar D-11 and D-10 bulldozers will be used to perform the grading operations. Berner utilizes a TopCon GPS system, mounted on the bulldozers to maintain the proper grades through the duration of the project.
